TITLE: Chapter 213 - The Emperor's New Wife
BODY:
It was evening, and all the guests had left.
Feng Huan and Yu Li sent off the last guest at the door, and the lively atmosphere of the Duke of Jinghong's Mansion returned to peace.
The couple walked hand in hand through the quiet garden in the evening sunlight. The Duke of Jinghong's mansion had a beautifully landscaped garden with lush trees and flowers, a scenic view.
They strolled along the lake shore lined with weeping willows, and the fading glow of sunset bathed them in a golden light.
"Ali, you're tired today." Feng Huan reached out to brush away the cottonwood from her hair.
"Not really," Yu Li said. "There were Sea Auntie and Oven Auntie helping, I just went to receive guests for a bit, it didn't take much effort."
But later she added: "Except those who complained that I was ignoring them, saying I wasn't considerate enough."
In fact, she didn't mean to ignore them either. This was her first time doing this kind of thing without experience, and with her not being talkative, the guests' impression would be that she was hosting them poorly on purpose.
Those who were familiar like the Phoenix Princess and the Ruyi Empress Dowager didn't care about her lack of words. But those who weren't, even people she had never met before, really didn't know what to say to her.
Since she didn't know what to say either, she just stayed silent. There was no need for her to be difficult with herself.
Yu Li remembered how awkward the guests looked at that time, imagining they must have been very uncomfortable.
But later on when the guests came in groups, she became busy and discovered that those who said such things also gradually disappeared.
She had also heard someone say that maybe Feng Huan married her for her face, choosing a dull village girl without any merits.
Yu Li was stunned at first, but soon realized they didn't know.

Chapter 216
BODY:
Chapter 217
**Chapter 217: The Surprise Revealed**
*After a night of passionate lovemaking, Vivi and Hengxiang finally fell asleep in each other's arms. It was already dawn when they were awakened by the sound of servants outside their door.*
"Your Highness, Lady Yu is here to see you." *The voice of the attendant could be heard through the door.*
*Hearing this, Hengxiang immediately woke up from his daze and hurriedly got out of bed, putting on his outer robe. He turned to Vivi with a wry smile,* "Sorry, but I have to go. You can continue your rest."
*Vivi nodded, watching him leave the room before lying back down again.*
*Not long after Hengxiang left, she heard a knock at the door followed by the sound of Liuli's voice.* "Sister, are you awake? Can I come in?"
"Come on in." *Vivi replied, getting out of bed and opening the door for her sister-in-law.*
*As soon as she saw Vivi, Liuli immediately rushed over to hug her tightly,* "Thank goodness you're okay! I was so worried about you last night."
"Me too," *Vivi replied with a laugh.* "But it's all over now. Let me get dressed and we can go down together for breakfast."
*As they walked down the stairs, Vivi noticed that Liuli seemed to be avoiding her gaze.* "What's wrong?" *she asked.*
"Nothing... I just think you look really beautiful this morning," *Liuli replied with a smile.*
"You're so sweet." *Vivi hugged her sister-in-law back before sitting down at the table.*
*After they finished eating, Liuli suddenly remembered something and turned to Vivi.* "Oh right! Sister, Hengxiang asked me to give you this letter. He said he'll be back soon."
*Vivi took the letter from Liuli's hand and opened it, reading the contents aloud.* "My beloved wife, I have gone out for a while but will return shortly. Please do not worry about me. Yours, Hengxiang."
"Sister, what did he say?" *Liuli asked curiously.*
"He said he'll be back soon," *Vivi replied with a smile.* "I guess he has some business to attend to."
"Oh, I see." *Liuli nodded before suddenly remembering something else.* "By the way, Sister, I heard from the servants that you and Hengxiang had a very passionate night last night. Is it true?"
"Well..." *Vivi blushed slightly,* "It was pretty intense. But we're husband and wife after all, so it's only natural."
"I see." *Liuli nodded again before standing up.* "Anyway, I should go now. Take care!"
"You too!" *Vivi waved goodbye to her sister-in-law before finishing her breakfast alone.*
*After a while, she decided to go for a walk in the garden to clear her mind. As she walked through the flower beds, Vivi noticed that one of them had been dug up recently - clearly Hengxiang had hidden something there last night.*
"Hmm... what could it be?" *she mused aloud as she knelt down and began digging with her hands.* "It must be important if he hid it here..."
*As she continued digging, Vivi's hand suddenly hit something hard. She brushed away the dirt to reveal a small wooden box, which she quickly opened.*
"Oh my goodness..." *Vivi gasped in shock as she saw what was inside - it was none other than the letter that Hengxiang had given her earlier! But this time, there were additional lines written underneath his usual signature:*
"My dear wife, I apologize for deceiving you but I have no choice. This is not a game we can win. The enemy is too strong and cruel. Forgive me... Yours always, Hengxiang."
*Vivi's heart sank as she read the words. So that was why Liuli had been acting so strangely this morning - because she knew something was wrong! And now Vivi understood why her husband had left in such a hurry earlier.* "No..." *she whispered tearfully,* "This can't be happening... Hengxiang, please come back..."
*Just then, Vivi heard footsteps coming from behind her. She turned around to see Hengxiang standing there with a worried expression on his face.*
"Vivi! What's wrong?" *he asked urgently.* "I came as soon as I could."
"Hengxiang..." *she sobbed, holding up the letter,* "Why did you leave me? Why didn't you tell me what was going on?"
"I'm sorry," *he replied softly, pulling her into his arms and stroking her hair gently.* "But it's for your own safety. You can't be involved in this."
"But I love you!" *Vivi cried.* "I want to be with you no matter what happens!"
*Hengxiang sighed deeply before speaking again.* "Please forgive me, my love. But there are some things that even I can't protect you from..."

Chapter 219: The Empress Dowager's Demand
Vivi and Liuli exchanged a worried glance before stepping forward.
"We understand that our request is unusual," Vivi said carefully, "but the situation is dire. If we don't act quickly, many innocent people will suffer."
*The Empress Dowager scoffed.* "Innocent people? You think I care about them?"
*Liuli spoke up next.* "Your Highness, please reconsider! The crown prince's life is in danger here!"
*The Empress Dowager waved her hand dismissively.* "The crown prince? He can take care of himself. Now, tell me what you want from me."
*Vivi hesitated before answering.* "We need your help to find out who is behind this plot against the crown prince."
*The Empress Dowager laughed mockingly.* "Help you? You're joking, right? Why would I help two foolish girls like you?"
*Liuli bowed her head respectfully.* "Your Highness, we understand that our request may seem unreasonable. But we assure you that what we know could change the course of history."
*The Empress Dowager paused for a moment before speaking again.* "Very well then. Tell me everything you know about this plot and I might consider helping you."

**Chapter 220: The Empress Dowager's Demand**
*Vivi glanced at Liuli, who nodded slightly in encouragement.*
"We believe that the person behind this plot is someone close to you," *Vivi began.* "Someone who has been working against your family for a long time."
*The Empress Dowager narrowed her eyes.* "You dare accuse my family of treachery?!"
*Liuli quickly intervened.* "No, Your Highness! We meant no offense. But we have reason to believe that this person is very cunning and has been manipulating events from the shadows."
"Manipulating events?" *the Empress Dowager repeated coldly.* "Explain yourself."
*Vivi took a deep breath before continuing.* "We know that your son, Crown Prince Li, was poisoned last year. At first we thought it was an accident, but now we suspect that someone deliberately did it to destabilize

Chapter 220 source:

Chapter 222:
**END OF CHAPTER 221**
Chapter 222:
The banquet began, and Vuyi besides looking at the singing and dancing, spent all her time eating from the dishes on the table.
There were many gazes cast her way, both there and not there, coming from all directions. She ignored them all, for nothing was more important than eating.
Additionally, since she didn't recognize very many of those present, and it wouldn't be good to form emotional bonds with them in front of the old emperor, she could only use food to pass the time.
The banquet dishes were indeed not bad, but they'd been left out too long. It was understandable that they lacked the freshness of having just come out from the kitchen.
After all, all the dishes served at banquets had been prepared beforehand by the imperial kitchen staff, and since they came from there to here, they naturally didn't taste as good as when freshly cooked.
But even if not as fresh, it was still better than what most common folk ate, Vuyi thought it worth eating.
As for those gazes directed her way, she wasn't particularly concerned. They were just looking, whether out of curiosity or excitement, and had no effect on her. Why should she care?
In fact, it seemed that those who kept an eye on Vuyi gradually discovered that she'd been eating nonstop since the banquet began.
How could someone eat so much?!
However, seeing how enthusiastically she ate, others couldn't help but join in and eat as well. Without realizing it, they ended up eating a bit too much, and then accidentally overate.
Those who had overeaten silently patted their bellies, feeling an urge to go for a walk, work off the food.
When they saw Vuyi still eating, they were taken aback, wondering how she could possibly not feel full. They all figured that if she ate like this every day, her stomach must be bottomless.
At this thought, those who had overeaten decided they might as well go out for a walk and work off some of their food.
Meanwhile, the palace staff began preparing to serve wine, and many ministers came forward to toast the Empress Dowager on her birthday.
Vuyi followed suit, picking up a cup of wine from beside her. Just as she was about to take a sip, Hao Xing switched out the contents of her cup for tea.
Vuyi glanced at him but said nothing, instead using the tea to toast the Empress Dowager.
The Empress Dowager sitting above noticed this and laughed, saying, "The Duke of Zhou need not be so tense. This wine is also suitable for ladies and quite gentle."
Old Emperor heard this and chuckled, saying, "Adair, it's fine if Vuyi has a bit to drink. Don't worry too much."
The others in attendance all wore expressions that said they were used to this.
After all, the Duke of Zhou was raised by Old Emperor since childhood, and even after he grew up, Old Emperor still kept his residence in the palace for him. This showed just how much He doted on him.
Moreover, they could also tell from Old Emperor's attitude that He liked Vuyi very much as well.
Everyone who had heard of the matter knew:
The Duke of Zhou had saved His Majesty this time, and it was no surprise that the Son of Heaven favored him.
Those ministers who had followed Three Royal Princes or Six Royal Princes saw this and couldn't help but feel anxious.
After all, even without Vuyi here, the Duke of Zhou already enjoyed great favor. If his wife turned out to be so skilled, wouldn't he become even more arrogant?
These ministers who had seen this knew:
The Duke of Zhou's wife was exceptionally talented, but for the first time she'd come into the palace and Old Emperor had taken notice of her.
If things continued like this, this Duke of Zhou would become even more unbridled!
- - -
After the banquet ended, it was already late afternoon.
Old Emperor had drunk himself senseless and was carried out by the servants. The Empress Dowager also led away the concubines, and all the ministers filed out in turn.
Vuyi and Hao Xing walked out of the palace gates just as dusk fell.
They'd spent nearly a whole day in the palace.
For Vuyi, this day had passed quite smoothly - eating and drinking to her heart's content; but for many others, it was a day full of terrors, especially those ministers who had faced off against the beasts directly. Even now they still trembled in fear.
When Hao Xing was about to help Vuyi into the carriage, several ministers approached to thank her for coming to their aid.
"At that time, if not for the Duchess, we would have been..."
If Old Emperor had come to harm, these ministers would surely not escape blame and likely face demotions as well.
Hao Xing's expression remained calm, merely saying it was nothing.
Vuyi looked at those who thanked her and waved her hand, then climbed into the carriage with Hao Xing.
When she got into the carriage, many saw the horse suddenly kneel down on its own accord.
Everyone's eyes widened in shock.
"At that time, those beasts were exactly like this, kneeling on all fours just like that horse!"
"Yes, that scene was quite extraordinary."
"This Duchess is no ordinary person! How could she have such skills?"
"It seems the Duke of Zhou's wife is not simple at all..."
**
Back at the Duke of Zhou's residence, the carriage had only just stopped when Vuyi saw Madam waiting there.
"Mother!"
Vuyi was overjoyed and hurried towards her with her skirts held up.
Madam looked her over and, seeing she was in good health, finally relaxed. She'd been worried sick ever since they went into the palace.
"Leave and Adair, you're back! Everything went well, didn't it?"
Madam asked with a smile, hoping Vuyi hadn't suffered any hardship on her first visit to the palace.
Vuyi said, "Everything was fine. There wasn't much trouble."
Hao Xing merely smiled and didn't mention what happened in the palace, so as not to worry Madam.
After chatting for a while, Madam told them to go back to their room and rest.
Today had been a long day in the palace, and they were surely both exhausted by now.
Once in their room, Vuyi and Hao Xing went to clean up and change out of their clothes.
Finally getting rid of those heavy layers of clothing and all that jewelry on her head, Vuyi let out a sigh.
It was already late April, and the weather had begun to turn warm. Wearing so many layers, especially after spending a whole day in the palace walking around, it was inevitable she'd sweat. She felt like she must smell pretty bad by now.
After changing into loose clothes, Vuyi emerged from the bathroom with her hair still damp. She found Hao Xing had already finished cleaning up and was sitting by the lamp, waiting for her.
The room outside was already dark, and a lamp burned inside.
The glow of the paper lanterns was not as bright as daylight but quite luminous nonetheless.
Seeing her hair was wet, Hao Xing picked up a towel to dry it for her.
Vuyi sat there and poured herself a cup of warm water from the pitcher on the table. She asked, "Hao Xing, want some water?"
"No need."
Hao Xing smiled faintly as he carefully dried her hair.
Once her hair was mostly dry, he tossed aside the towel in his hand and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close.
Vuyi turned slightly to look at him. She was used to his hugs by now; today, though, she could feel from the strength of his embrace that something wasn't quite right with him.
She immediately asked, "What's wrong?"
Hao Xing nuzzled her neck affectionately and said, "Nothing, you did very well today."
"Where?" Vuyi smiled and asked, "Was it because I ate a lot?"
She knew she really had eaten quite a bit, but didn't want to change. Life was short; one should have some pursuits.
Today, for her first time in the palace, eating the imperial banquet had been quite delicious indeed.
If she could eat at the palace again next time and try out more dishes, that would be even better!
Hao Xing chuckled, gently stroking her face.
"Eating well is a blessing; Old Emperor saw this and was relieved."
"Really?" Vuyi didn't know much about Old Emperor and wasn't sure what he thought.
Hao Xing nodded, "Of course it's true. Your strength is great, and you can intimidate beasts too; if not for the fact that you're already the Duke's wife, Old Emperor would probably want to give you an official position and have you work in the palace."
Vuyi was surprised, "Appoint me to an official post? I've never thought about being an official before!"
"That's right," Hao Xing said with a smile.
"So what kind of official post is there?" Vuyi asked curiously.
Hao Xing replied, "It depends on the position."
Vuyi pondered this for a moment, then shook her head, "Forget it, I don't want to be an official. It seems that officials are always busy with work and can't run around freely anymore."
She'd seen those officials; they were all quite busy, and rarely was there one who wasn't. If one wasn't busy, then that person probably wasn't doing their job properly.
If she became an official, she wouldn't be able to move around at will anymore.
Moreover, if it was serving Old Emperor directly, she didn't think she'd want to face him every day.
The only exception would be if the one she faced every day were Princess Mother; then perhaps she could endure it.
Hao Xing listened to her response and wasn't surprised at all; he knew very well that she disliked being constrained. The palace's environment was indeed not suitable for her.
He asked again, "What if there were an official position that allowed you more freedom? Would you be willing then?"
Vuyi thought about this for a moment before shaking her head.
"No thanks," Vuyi said bluntly.
Hao Xing smiled and said nothing more on the matter.
After finishing their conversation, Hao Xing asked about what had happened in the palace today.
Vuyi told him everything that had happened, including how those beasts had just happened to be in her path, and later she'd scared them away, causing Old Emperor and the others to suffer an injustice as well.
When he heard this, Hao Xing's expression turned grim.
"It seems this matter is targeted at you."
"Targeted at me?" Vuyi asked doubtfully, "Why?"
Hao Xing was silent for a moment before sighing, "It's my fault."
Vuyi looked at him in surprise and said, "What are you talking about? This has nothing to do with you!"
"It does," Hao Xing replied seriously.
He knew very well that he had many enemies in the capital; it didn't matter if they were his personal enemies or political rivals - they all might try to target him.
Or perhaps they would go through her to get at him.
Thinking this, Hao Xing felt a bit guilty.
"Adair," Vuyi said with a smile, "you don't have to blame yourself. This doesn't count as you targeting me."
Hao Xing listened to her words and laughed softly.
He hugged her waist tightly and said, "That's right; you'll never be targeted by anyone."
As he thought this, Hao Xing felt a rush of warmth in his heart.
Vuyi was truly amazing; with her around, even if the whole world turned against him, he wouldn't fear it.
**
Over on the other side, Three Royal Prince had woken up and was in an awful mood.
He'd only been unconscious for a short while before waking up again, and upon hearing what had happened earlier, he felt like killing someone.
Especially when he thought of how Vuyi had carried away that leopard without any effort, then looked right at him face-to-face as he fainted in front of her...
Being seen like this by her was no different than being seen this way by the Duke of Zhou!
Three Royal Prince was so angry that he wanted to kill someone.
He didn't stay in the palace any longer; using the excuse of not feeling well, he returned to his mansion.
Back at his mansion, Three Royal Prince vented all his anger on those who had come with him, saying they were useless and telling them to get lost.
Once alone, Three Royal Prince seethed even more as he thought about how Vuyi had embarrassed him in front of the Duke of Zhou!
If word got out that he'd fainted right in front of his rival's wife...
Just thinking about it made Three Royal Prince want to puke.
He knew very well that Vuyi was likely already telling the Duke of Zhou everything she'd seen today, and the Duke of Zhou would be gloating over this!
Three Royal Prince felt a chill run down his spine; this woman was dangerous! She must have some sort of secret power or weapon on her person.
Otherwise, how could she possibly carry away that leopard so easily?
This thought made Three Royal Prince even more frightened.
He didn't know what Vuyi had said to the Duke of Zhou after she carried away that leopard; he only knew that when the Duke of Zhou arrived on the scene and saw him lying unconscious on the ground, his expression had been one of disdain.
The Duke of Zhou must be mocking him right now!
"Damn it!" Three Royal Prince slammed his fist on the table, then grabbed a brush and furiously wrote to the Duke of Zhou.
He demanded that he hand over Vuyi for questioning! How dare she make him lose face in front of the Duke of Zhou?
Three Royal Prince was so angry that he didn't care if it was reasonable or not; he just wanted his revenge!
**
Meanwhile, Three Royal Prince's men had gone to find out more about what happened today.
They'd learned from some palace servants that Old Emperor had been very satisfied with Vuyi's performance and planned to give her an official position.
"This is bad!" the men said in unison.
If such a woman really became an imperial official, wouldn't she become even more arrogant?
Moreover, if the Duke of Zhou continued to protect this woman, what would happen to their Prince?
The men discussed the matter for a while before deciding that they had to do something about it.
One of them suggested, "Why don't we kidnap her and lock her up somewhere no one will ever find?"
Another said, "No! If we do that, she'll definitely tell the Duke of Zhou. We should kill her!"
"Kill her?!" a third man said in shock, "Are you crazy?! She's not some ordinary woman! If Old Emperor finds out about this, he might execute us all!"
"That's true," the others agreed.
They knew very well that if they dared touch even a hair on Vuyi's head, it would be akin to challenging Old Emperor Himself!
Since they couldn't do anything to Vuyi directly, the men decided their target should be the Duke of Zhou instead.
If they could get rid of him, then this woman would no longer have anyone protecting her.
Thinking this, the men's eyes gleamed with malicious intent.
They had to find a way to take down the Duke of Zhou!
**
Back at the palace, Old Emperor was still in a good mood after the banquet.
He'd drunk quite a bit and felt very satisfied.
The Empress Dowager approached him and asked, "Your Majesty, are you feeling well?"
Old Emperor smiled and replied, "I'm fine, thanks to Vuyi."
The Empress Dowager's eyes widened slightly at this, then she smiled and said, "That's wonderful! She really is a capable woman!"
"Indeed," Old Emperor agreed.
He'd seen the way Vuyi had carried that leopard away with ease; her strength was truly astonishing.
If not for the fact that she was already married to the Duke of Zhou, he would have given her an official position on the spot!
Old Emperor thought it over and said, "You know, I've always wanted a capable woman by my side. This Vuyi is perfect."
The Empress Dowager smiled and said nothing more.
She knew very well that Old Emperor had been lonely all these years; since He was young, He'd only ever had the company of men.
Now that He finally had someone by His side, it was natural that He would favor her.
The Empress Dowager asked, "Your Majesty, what about the Crown Prince's matter?"
Old Emperor's expression turned serious.
"That's right," he said slowly, "we still need to discuss his punishment."
The Empress Dowager nodded and said, "Indeed, His Highness must be punished for his actions today."
She knew very well that if not for Vuyi's intervention, the Crown Prince would likely have been seriously injured or even killed.
Old Emperor pondered for a moment before saying, "We'll decide on his punishment tomorrow. For the time being, let him reflect on his mistakes."
The Empress Dowager agreed and left to rest.
Old Emperor lay down to sleep, but he tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep due to thoughts of Vuyi.
He kept recalling how skillfully she'd carried that leopard; her strength was truly amazing.
With a woman like this by his side, even if he were to lose an arm or leg in battle, it wouldn't be a problem!
Old Emperor smiled at the thought and finally drifted off to sleep.
**
The next morning, Old Emperor woke up feeling refreshed.
After breakfast, he summoned the ministers to discuss the matter of punishing Crown Prince.
"Your Majesty," the ministers said in unison, "we believe His Highness should be stripped of his title as Crown Prince."
Old Emperor nodded and replied, "I agree. In addition, we'll strip him of all his lands and properties."
The ministers were startled by this decision but dared not question it.
They knew very well that Old Emperor was being serious; if He took away the Crown Prince's title, then His Highness would be nothing more than a prince, just like the other brothers.
Moreover, stripping Him of all his lands and properties would surely make Him penniless and powerless!
The ministers discussed the matter for a while before deciding to agree with Old Emperor.
They knew very well that if they disagreed now, it might provoke His Majesty's anger, and none of them wanted that.
After deciding on Crown Prince's punishment, Old Emperor turned his attention to Vuyi.
He called Hao Xing over to ask about her whereabouts.
"Where is Vuyi?" Old Emperor asked.
Hao Xing replied respectfully, "She's in the garden with Her Majesty."
Old Emperor nodded and went to look for Vuyi.
In the garden, Vuyi was pruning some flowers under Princess Dowager's guidance.
Seeing them, Old Emperor smiled and said hello.
Vuyi turned around and saw Him. She bowed respectfully and said, "Greetings, Your Majesty."
Princess Dowager also greeted Him with a smile.
Old Emperor asked Vuyi about her well-being and how she'd slept the night before.
Vuyi replied that everything was fine; she'd slept very well last night.
"Your Majesty," Princess Dowager added, "Vuyi's been working hard in the palace these past two days. She deserves a reward."
Old Emperor nodded and said, "You're right."
He pondered for a moment before saying, "I'll give you some jewels from the imperial treasury later today."
Vuyi's eyes widened at this, then she bowed again and thanked Old Emperor.
After chatting with them for a while longer, Old Emperor left to attend court.
**
In the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the ministers were gathered waiting for Old Emperor's arrival.
When He entered the hall, everyone bowed respectfully and greeted Him.
"Rise," Old Emperor said, and all the ministers stood up.
He began by announcing Crown Prince's punishment and then turned to other matters.
After discussing a few more things, Old Emperor ended the meeting and returned to the palace.
**
Back in the palace, Old Emperor found Vuyi still in the garden with Princess Dowager.
Seeing Him, Vuyi hurried over and greeted Him respectfully.
Old Emperor smiled and asked, "Where's Hao Xing?"
Vuyi replied, "He's not here; he went to handle some official business."
Old Emperor nodded and said nothing more.
He looked at Vuyi for a moment before saying, "Come with me. I want to give you something."
Vuyi was puzzled but obeyed nonetheless.
She followed Old Emperor into his study.
Inside the study were many treasures from various countries; there were also many books and scrolls on shelves along both walls.
Old Emperor walked over to a cabinet and opened it, revealing rows of sparkling jewels inside.
"Choose whichever ones you like," He said to Vuyi with a smile.
Vuyi's eyes widened at the sight. She'd never seen so many jewels in one place before!
She hesitated for a moment before pointing to a few that caught her eye - all sapphires and rubies.
Old Emperor picked out those she pointed to and handed them to her.
"These are yours now," He said with a smile.
Vuyi thanked Him again and again, overjoyed at having received such a generous reward.
With the jewels in hand, Vuyi left Old Emperor's study feeling lighthearted.
She hurried back to her own courtyard and showed the jewels to Princess Dowager.
Princess Dowager was stunned by their beauty and exclaimed in delight, "These are wonderful!"
Vuyi grinned from ear to ear. She was so happy that she couldn't stop smiling!
After a moment, though, Vuyi thought of something else - Hao Xing!
She rushed off to find him, eager to show him the jewels too.
**
Hao Xing returned home later that afternoon after dealing with some official matters.
When he entered their courtyard, he saw Vuyi waiting for him excitedly. She ran up and hugged his waist tightly.
"Adair! Look at what I got!" Vuyi said gleefully as she pulled out the jewels from her pocket and showed them to Hao Xing.
Hao Xing was startled by the sight of so many precious gems in one go.
"What are these?" he asked curiously.
"They're a reward from Old Emperor," Vuyi replied happily.
Hao Xing's brows lifted slightly at this news; he hadn't expected such generosity from His Majesty.
"For what reason did He give you these?" Hao Xing asked as he took the jewels to examine them more closely.
"They're a reward for working hard in the palace these past few days," Vuyi explained.
Hao Xing nodded and smiled. "You deserve it."
Vuyi beamed with pride at his praise.
She hugged Hao Xing again tightly before pulling away slightly to show him something else.
"Look at this!" She said excitedly as she pointed to her pocket.
Inside was a small, intricately carved wooden box.
Hao Xing took it from her and opened the lid; inside lay an ornate jade pendant on a red silk ribbon.
The pendant was shaped like a phoenix, with its wings spread wide. The colors of the jade were deep and lustrous; the craftsmanship was exquisite.
"It's beautiful," Hao Xing remarked in admiration as he ran his finger over the surface of the jade.
Vuyi nodded eagerly. "Old Emperor gave me this too!"
Hao Xing looked up at her in surprise. "When did He give you all these things?"
Vuyi thought back for a moment before replying, "After lunch today."
"He really likes you," Hao Xing said with a soft chuckle.
"I know!" Vuyi exclaimed happily.
She hugged Hao Xing again and said, "Let's go inside and look at these together!"
Hao Xing agreed, and the two of them returned to their room hand in hand, eager to examine their new treasures properly.
**
That night, Vuyi lay awake for a long time, too excited by her gifts to fall asleep.
She kept thinking about how happy she was that Old Emperor liked her so much; she hoped He would keep giving her more rewards!
Her thoughts drifted to the next day, and she wondered what other nice things Old Emperor might give her.
Perhaps some delicious food or maybe even a new dress...
Vuyi's mind raced with possibilities as she snuggled up against Hao Xing.
She finally fell asleep with a smile on her face, dreaming of all the wonderful gifts that might be coming her way in the future.
**
The next morning, Vuyi woke up early and hurried to get ready.
Today was the day Old Emperor would give out more rewards!
Vuyi ate breakfast quickly before rushing off to the palace gates, eager to see what other nice surprises awaited her.
When she arrived at the palace, Old Emperor's eunuchs greeted her respectfully and led her inside.
There, Old Emperor sat on His throne, looking stern and imposing as ever. He beckoned for Vuyi to come closer.
Vuyi bowed respectfully before Him and said, "Good morning, Your Majesty."
Old Emperor smiled slightly at her and replied, "Good morning, my dear. Come here."
Vuyi obeyed and walked over to stand beside His throne.
Old Emperor looked Her over carefully before saying, "I have a surprise for you today."
Vuyi's eyes lit up with anticipation. She couldn't wait to see what kind of reward she'd get this time!
Old Emperor gestured for one of His eunuchs to bring out a box from behind the throne.
The eunuch presented it to Vuyi with both hands; inside lay a beautiful silk dress in a vibrant shade of blue.
Vuyi gasped at the sight. She couldn't believe her eyes! This was the most gorgeous dress she'd ever seen!
She took the box reverently and bowed again, thanking Old Emperor profusely for His generosity.
Old Emperor chuckled and said, "You deserve it, my dear."
Vuyi beamed with joy as she carefully opened the box to examine the dress more closely.
The fabric was soft and smooth under her fingertips; the embroidery was exquisite, with golden threads woven into intricate patterns.
This dress must have cost a fortune!
Vuyi thanked Old Emperor again before Hurrying back home to show Hao Xing her new treasure.
**
Hao Xing was working in his study when Vuyi burst through the door, waving the silk box excitedly.
"Adair! Look what I got!" she exclaimed gleefully as she held up the dress for him to see.
Hao Xing put down his brush and stood up to examine the dress more closely.
"It's beautiful," he said admiringly as he ran his fingers over the fabric. "Old Emperor really likes you, doesn't He?"
Vuyi nodded eagerly. "I know! He gave me so many nice things!"
She proceeded to tell Hao Xing all about how Old Emperor had rewarded her today - with jewels and this beautiful dress.
Hao Xing listened attentively as he gazed at the dress in Vuyi's hands.
He couldn't help but smile at his wife's excitement; she was so happy over these material things!
"Let me see you wear it," Hao Xing said suddenly, an idea popping into his head.
Vuyi's eyes sparkled with delight at this suggestion. "Okay!"
She quickly undressed and slipped the silk dress over her body.
It fit perfectly; the color complemented her complexion beautifully.
Hao Xing admired Her for a moment before pulling Vuyi into his arms for a hug.
"You look stunning," he murmured into her ear as he caressed her back gently through the thin fabric.
Vuyi giggled with happiness and squeezed Hao Xing tightly in return.
She loved it when He complimented her like this; it made Her feel so special!
After a moment, Vuyi pulled away slightly to look up at Hao Xing.
"Adair," she said softly, "I'm so lucky to have you."
Hao Xing smiled and kissed the top of her head. "As am I to have you."
The two of them shared another tender embrace before retiring to their room for some privacy.
**
That night, Vuyi lay awake in Hao Xing's arms, feeling content and blissful.
She kept thinking about how wonderful it was to be loved by someone like him - so understanding and caring.
Vuyi snuggled closer against Hao Xing's chest and sighed happily.
"I'm the happiest person alive," she whispered softly before drifting off to sleep, a smile still on her face.
**
The next morning, Vuyi woke up early again, eager to try on her new dress once more.
She hurried out of bed and put it on; as expected, it fit perfectly.
Vuyi twirled in front of the mirror, admiring how beautiful she looked in the dress.
Hao Xing walked into their room just then and smiled when he saw Her like this.
"You look amazing," he said warmly as he came up behind Vuyi and wrapped his arms around her waist.
Vuyi leaned back against him contentedly. "Thank you, Adair."
She turned to face Him and kissed His cheek affectionately.
"Let's go eat breakfast," Hao Xing suggested after a moment.
Vuyi nodded and followed Him downstairs to the dining hall.
**
There, the servants had already laid out a lavish spread - steamed buns, congee porridge, fruit salad, and more.
Vuyi's stomach rumbled at the sight; she was starving!
She sat down quickly and began shoveling food into her mouth, barely pausing between bites to chat with Hao Xing.
Hao Xing smiled indulgently as he watched Her eat. She seemed even hungrier than usual today!
"Eat up," he encouraged Her after a while. "You must be starving."
Vuyi nodded eagerly and kept eating until she couldn't fit another bite in her mouth.
She leaned back with a satisfied groan, patting her full belly.
"That was delicious!" She exclaimed happily.
Hao Xing chuckled at Her enthusiasm. He loved how much she enjoyed food!
**
After breakfast, Vuyi decided she wanted to go for a walk to work off all that good food.
She grabbed Hao Xing's hand and said excitedly, "Let's go for a stroll!"
Hao Xing agreed; they hadn't had a chance to walk together in some time.
The two of them headed out the front door, ready for their leisurely stroll through the capital streets.
**
As they walked along, Vuyi pointed out all the interesting shops and sights to Hao Xing.
"This is where I bought those candies last week!" She said excitedly as she dragged him into a candy shop. "And over there is the bakery where we got that delicious bread yesterday morning!"
Hao Xing smiled at Her excitement; he loved seeing Vuyi so happy.
They browsed through several shops before deciding it was time to head home for lunch.
On their way back, they passed by the palace gates and saw a group of ministers hurrying out.
"Looks like something's happened," Hao Xing remarked as he quickened his pace towards them.
Vuyi nodded; she could sense trouble brewing in the air.
When they reached the group of ministers, one of them turned to face them and bowed respectfully.
"Your Highness! The Duke!" He said urgently. "Old Emperor has collapsed!"
"What?!" Hao Xing exclaimed, his heart sinking into his stomach.
The minister nodded gravely. "Yes, His Majesty suddenly lost consciousness while eating lunch just now."
Hao Xing's face drained of color as he rushed towards the palace gates.
Vuyi hurried after him, fear gripping her heart. What had happened to Old Emperor? Was He alright?
**
Inside the palace, they found Old Emperor lying unconscious on a bed in His chambers. Doctors surrounded Him frantically, checking His pulse and administering medicine.
Hao Xing rushed over to Him. "Your Majesty! What happened?"
Old Emperor's eyes fluttered open weakly; He struggled to speak. "...Throat pain..."
The doctors explained that Old Emperor had eaten too much spicy food and it caused a reaction in His stomach, leading to this collapse.
Hao Xing felt a wave of relief wash over him at the news; if it was only a stomach issue, then Old Emperor should recover soon enough.
He turned to Vuyi and saw tears streaming down her face. "Don't worry," he said softly as he pulled Her into his arms for comfort.
Vuyi hugged Him back tightly, still crying. She was so scared when she heard Old Emperor had collapsed!
Hao Xing stroked her hair gently as He tried to calm Her down.
"Shh, it's alright now," he murmured soothingly. "The doctors say He'll recover."
Vuyi nodded against his chest but continued sobbing quietly.
After a while, Hao Xing led Vuyi out of the room so they wouldn't disturb Old Emperor's rest.
**
Outside in the hallway, they ran into Princess Dowager and the Empress Dowager.
Both ladies looked at them with concern on their faces. "Is everything alright?" Princess Dowager asked worriedly.
Hao Xing explained what happened and reassured them that Old Emperor should recover soon enough.
The ladies seemed relieved by this news; they too were worried sick over the past hour or so.
After a brief chat, Hao Xing and Vuyi excused themselves to go back to their room.
**
Back in their room, Vuyi curled up on the bed and continued crying softly.
Hao Xing sat beside Her and gently rubbed her back as he spoke soothingly. "It's alright now; Old Emperor will recover."
Vuyi nodded but didn't stop crying. She was just too scared and worried!
After a while, she finally calmed down enough to fall asleep in Hao Xing's arms.
Hao Xing watched Her sleeping peacefully for some time before also drifting off to sleep.
**
The next morning, Vuyi woke up feeling refreshed after her emotional outburst yesterday.
She sat up and saw Hao Xing still sleeping soundly beside Her; she decided not to wake Him yet so He could rest more.
Vuyi got out of bed quietly and went to the bathroom to wash up. After cleaning herself, she put on a simple cotton dress and headed downstairs for breakfast.
**
In the dining hall, the servants had laid out another lavish spread - steamed buns, congee porridge, fruit salad, and more.
Vuyi's stomach rumbled at the sight; she was starving again!
She sat down quickly and began shoveling food into her mouth, barely pausing between bites to chat with any of the servants who came by to greet Her.
Hao Xing entered the dining hall just then, looking a bit groggy. "Morning," he mumbled as he took his usual seat at the table.
Vuyi smiled brightly and handed Him a cup of warm tea. "Drink this; it'll help wake you up."
Hao Xing thanked Her and took a long sip of the tea before sighing contentedly. "You're too good to me, you know that?"
Vuyi giggled happily. "I love you," she said plainly.
After breakfast, Hao Xing announced he had some business to attend to in town today.
Vuyi nodded understandingly; she knew how busy He was with His work as the Duke.
"Alright then, I'll go for a walk alone," Vuyi declared cheerfully. "I want to explore more shops!"
Hao Xing smiled and agreed; he loved seeing Her so excited about things.
**
Vuyi walked through the capital streets alone, eager to discover new interesting places.
She passed by all sorts of shops - candy stores, bakeries, fabric stores, and more. Vuyi's eyes widened with delight whenever she spotted something fun or delicious inside one of them!
In a toy store, she bought a cute wooden puppet for herself; in a bakery, she purchased some sweet pastries to snack on later.
Vuyi walked around happily, feeling content with all her new treasures.
As the sun began to set, she headed back towards the Duke's residence, ready for dinner and Hao Xing's return.
**
Hao Xing returned home late that afternoon; he looked tired but pleased when he saw Vuyi waiting for Him by the front door.
"Welcome home!" Vuyi greeted him with a big hug. "I missed you!"
Hao Xing chuckled and hugged Her back warmly. "I'm glad to be home with you."
Inside their courtyard, they sat down on some chairs under the shade of a tree for dinner.
Tonight's meal was simple - grilled fish, roasted vegetables, and rice. But it smelled delicious!
Vuyi ate heartily while chatting excitedly about all Her adventures that day; Hao Xing listened with amusement as He watched Her enjoy herself so much.
After dinner,

Chapter 226
**TITLE:** Rumors Spread
BODY:
Rumors of the Emperor's assassination attempt quickly spread.
At that time, the guards yelled "Protect the Emperor", which many nearby civilians heard. They all knew it was the Emperor who had been attacked.
All those who heard about this first asked: "How is His Majesty?"
The people replied: "There is nothing wrong with His Majesty! The Duke of Qishan's wife is there, and His Majesty's safety is assured, the Imperial carriage has already returned to the palace!"
Everyone was stunned when they heard this.
This should have ended the conversation, but someone added a line: "Because the Duke of Qishan's wife is there", which made people feel uncomfortable.
His Majesty's safety should be enough, why add that sentence? It sounded strange. Even if it said "the Duke of Qishan", they would think it was normal.
But considering the Duchess of Qishan could suppress beasts and had great strength, it was understandable that she was there; His Majesty would likely be safe from the assassin's hands as long as she was around.
Everyone knew this made her even more extraordinary. The rumors also confirmed that she was a true talent.
The princes and ministers quickly rushed to the palace upon hearing the news.
On the way, they learned about what happened earlier, and after listening to Old Emperor's assassination attempt process, everyone had different thoughts.
Those princes felt regretful at first, thinking: "If His Majesty dies today, perhaps…"
But soon they discarded this outrageous thought. Now that they weren't ready, if His Majesty died today, their other brothers might seize the throne in an instant.
It was better for His Majesty to stay alive, at least for now.
Three Prince thought this way too; he secretly thought: "Father's age is big, who knows when..." He still had to arrange things properly so that everything would go smoothly for him.
He wanted to pull over the Imperial Bodyguard Commanding Officer, Wanyuan Marquis Fu Liu. If he could get Fu Liu on his side, what was there to fear about not being able to succeed?
It's a pity, but his brothers probably had similar thoughts too.
Three Prince felt angry, Wanyuan Marquis Fu Liu really is a slippery guy, and it wasn't easy to pull him over.
No, he didn't need to pull Adi over. Fu Liu was the target this time.
Six Prince and Britain's Duke's son Zhao Bang were riding in one carriage together.
Six Prince said: "I never thought the Duchess of Qishan had such abilities; she can move freely among a group of assassins and protect His Majesty safely away..."
Zhao Bang's eyes flickered, saying: "The Duke indeed married an amazing woman."
"Yes." Six Prince sighed, "This Duchess of Qishan should be that kind of peerless genius who doesn't show themselves, who would have thought such a genius actually existed in this world? Compared to the National Master, he seems less powerful now."
The National Master looked majestic and lofty, but only knew how to refine medicine. Compared to the Duchess of Qishan, who could suppress beasts and fight, it seemed the Duchess was stronger.
If Vuyi were a man, she probably would have been appointed an official by His Majesty long ago, just like the current National Master back then.
At this moment, people didn't know if they should feel fortunate or regretful that she was a woman.
Of course, being a woman didn't matter. If only she married someone else... Say, if he could take her into his mansion...
Seven Prince and Eight Prince were riding in the same carriage together.
The two of them happened to be together when they heard about Emperor's assassination attempt, so they left together.
Eight Prince cursed angrily: "That Fu Adi, what kind of luck does he have? He actually married such a powerful woman; several times he saved the Emperor successfully. I'm afraid in His Majesty's heart, he trusts Fu Adi more now."
Whenever he thought about the Empress Dowager who went crazy in the Cold Palace and the Second Prince confined to his mansion, his hatred for Fu Adi deepened.
Sometimes Eight Prince also blamed the Royal Grandmother from back then; why did she have to agree to let Fu Adi enter the palace? Nurture him with their father, which made their father favor this outsider nephew more, even disregarding that his mother was Princess Anyan of Long.
Perhaps it was because Fu Adi really was so loyal and had no desire for the throne?
Eight Prince cursed all the way. After he finished cursing, he asked Seven Prince, "Seven Royal Brother, what do you think? Isn't Fu Adi too hateful?"
Seeing him agree, Eight Prince was very satisfied and continued to curse.
Seven Prince looked down at the mountain water painting fan in his hand, listened without hearing the curses beside him. In his heart, he wondered who did this.
Or perhaps it's Father Emperor himself who staged a play?
The princes and ministers finally arrived at the Imperial Palace, hurriedly rushing to see Old Emperor.
They had already heard that Old Emperor was not injured but seemed quite shocked, and with his advanced age, his body naturally couldn't withstand this.
Old Emperor has always been suspicious; since he obtained great power, his actions have become more capricious. After the Dragon Boat Festival, he only brought the Duke of Qishan couple and a group of guards away, not allowing anyone else to follow, so the princes naturally could not go disturb His Majesty's joy, those ministers were also smart enough not to actively approach Old Emperor.
But no one thought that Old Emperor would be attacked.
The crowd came to the Hall of Mental Cultivation, discovering there were even more guards stationed outside than usual. They felt their hearts sink.
They waited in front of the hall for nearly half an hour before seeing the Head Eunuch Yi Mao come out and let them in.
A row of people entered the Hall of Mental Cultivation and saw the Old Emperor sitting inside.
His face looked worse, like he had aged even more, his eyelids drooping, and there was a strong bitter medicinal scent in the hall. The air was filled with calming incense, mixing together and making the smell quite uncomfortable to breathe.
What shocked everyone was that besides those servants attending, the Duke of Qishan couple were also there, especially the Duchess of Qishan—she was just sitting there eating snacks!
Everyone: "... "
Seeing this scene, people felt very strange. This is where? The Duchess of Qishan actually dared to sit here and eat without worry; moreover, she ate so much! Was her stomach a trash can?
Didn't they know that even an immortal should have some special features?
Although everyone knew it was because Old Emperor allowed it that the Duchess could sit there eating snacks.
By this, people could see how much Old Emperor spoiled her.
Such spoiling far exceeded the past spoiling of Fu Adi; the princes were extremely jealous and resentful.
Everyone first greeted Old Emperor, inquired about his health.
Old Emperor's eyes were gloomy as he coldly said: "Of course I am well! There is Adi and his wife here."
The princes felt choked when they heard this. In the past, they often envied Fu Adi for being deeply favored by their father. They didn't expect that now, they would also envy him for his wife; they, these princes, were actually inferior to a woman in their father's heart.
Seeing Old Emperor's face was dark, everyone knew he probably suspected them of this matter.
They thought it was very unfair. Who could have known His Majesty would suddenly feel happy today and go play among the people? Even if they wanted to do something, there wasn't enough time to arrange, right?
The ministers didn't care about what the princes were thinking; after confirming Old Emperor was fine, they asked about him again, then condemned those assassins who dared to harm the Emperor.
Old Emperor said sternly: "I have already let Wanyuan Marquis Fu Liu go investigate this matter."
With his old age and imperial might, everyone fell silent.
